Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has just launched on Steam, but its performance issues and frequent crashes have led to a “Mixed” review score. Players have reported rough optimization, impacting the overall experience.

Despite PlayStation and Insomniac Games once insisting that Marvel’s Spider-Man would remain exclusive to the PS4, the landscape of gaming exclusivity is rapidly evolving. Much like Xbox has been expanding its first-party titles to other platforms, PlayStation has also been bringing many of its biggest games to PC in recent years.

Insomniac’s Spider-Man games have been making their way to PC, with the original game and its Miles Morales midquel recently arriving on Steam. This trend continued with the highly anticipated release of Spider-Man 2 just a few days ago. However, what should have been an exciting moment for Spider-Man fans has instead been met with disappointment.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 launched on Steam yesterday, but its debut has been far from smooth. Currently holding a “Mixed” review score from over 1,700 users, the PC port has been widely criticized for poor optimization, frequent crashes, and performance issues.

One of the most upvoted reviews, written by user Lumi Kløvstad, advises players to wait for stability patches before purchasing. They highlight several major problems, including lighting failures in cutscenes, significant frame-rate drops in certain scenes, as well as desynchronized audio and stuttering.

Lighting doesn’t load in some cutscenes, those same scenes run at seconds-per-frame, audio desync issues up the wazoo, freezing, stuttering, and just about every other performance issue I can think of.

While many players are grappling with performance issues, it’s evident that the problems aren’t affecting everyone. Numerous positive reviews indicate that some users are experiencing smooth gameplay without any hitches, highlighting that optimization might be the core issue for many. Nonetheless, the general sentiment around the game’s current state is far from favorable.

Spider-Man 2 showcased remarkable use of the PS5’s hardware, making its rocky launch even more surprising, especially given the positive reception of previous PlayStation ports. Hopefully, the developers will address these concerns swiftly with necessary patches.
